History
Our Story
Rooted in community. Focused on possibility. Committed to progress.
Since 1991, the San Juan Education Foundation has evolved with one clear goal: to open doors for students and empower educators with the resources they need to dream big and teach boldly.
What began as a small effort to reduce student costs for technology has grown into a thriving, community-powered foundation — investing in innovation, equity, and opportunity across the San Juan Unified School District.
How We Got Here
- 1991 – We were founded as the San Juan Foundation, focused on easing the cost of computer access for students.
- 2006 – Reimagined and reenergized by a group of visionary volunteers and San Juan Unified leaders, the Foundation shifted its focus to supporting Science, Technology, and the Arts (STARS). That same year, we launched our now-flagship Direct-to-Teacher Grant Program, which has since awarded over $890,000 to educators.
- 2007 – We proudly became the San Juan Education Foundation.
- 2009 – Our signature event, An Evening with the STARS, lit up the district with inspiration — celebrating distinguished alumni and raising critical funds for students and schools.
- 2015 – We began stewarding our very first scholarship fund, the Cal Worthington Memorial Scholarship, marking the start of a new chapter in student support.
- 2021 – With continued growth, we hired our first full-time Executive Director to strengthen operations, deepen partnerships, and amplify our impact.
- 2022 – The beloved Fair Oaks Chicken Run chose us as its beneficiary, further connecting us with community traditions that lift up local schools.
- 2023 – $135,000, our largest single contribution, was donated to expand arts education opportunities across the district, reflecting a deep belief in creativity, equity, and the power of public education.
- 2025 – Thrilled to be named Nonprofit of the Year by the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce — a true testament to the power of community and partnership.
Where We Are Now
Today, we raise and reinvest over $50,000 annually in educator grants and proudly manage twenty scholarship funds that provide nearly 60 graduating seniors each year with awards ranging from $500 to $2,000.
Each project funded, each student supported, and each partnership forged reflects the heart of our vision: a San Juan Unified School District where funding is not a barrier to equitable opportunity and access.
